Question 1

What is DeepSeek?

Accepted Answer

DeepSeek is a chinese artificial intelligence company founded in July 2023 by Liang Wenfeng, who simultaneously serves as CEO of High-Flyer, a hedge fund that has been the primary backer of this AI venture. Headquartered in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, the company has rapidly emerged as a significant player in the global AI landscape through its development of large language model technology. The company’s flagship offering centers on the DeepSeek-R1 model and its corresponding AI chatbot, which provides advanced conversational capabilities, coding assistance, and mathematical reasoning. DeepSeek also offers a chat-based interface, enabling users to interact with the model in a conversational manner similar to ChatGPT. The chatbot generates high-quality responses to user prompts, with a strong emphasis on the accuracy, reasoning, and quality of its conversational outputs. The model is specifically designed to provide accurate and well-reasoned answers to user queries, focusing on answer correctness and the reasoning process behind each answer. Independent evaluations consistently show that DeepSeek-R1 performs at or near parity with OpenAI’s GPT-4 and o1 models across various coding related benchmarks and general conversation tasks.

Question 2

What sets DeepSeek apart from competitors isn’t just performance—it’s the company’s commitment to open collaboration. The DeepSeek coder base and other models are released under the MIT license, making them freely available for research and development. This open-source approach represents a stark contrast to the proprietary strategies employed by most Western AI companies. DeepSeek’s models are further refined as instruction tuned models, enhancing their ability to follow detailed prompts and tasks.

Accepted Answer

The company’s code intelligence capabilities have garnered particular attention from developers worldwide. DeepSeek coder models span various sizes, from 1 billion to 33 billion parameters, positioning them firmly within the frontier model category. These code language models demonstrate exceptional performance in programming tasks, often outperforming larger, more expensive alternatives. The output generated by DeepSeek’s models is notable for its quality and structure, especially in coding and reasoning tasks. The Technology Behind DeepSeek The technological foundation of DeepSeek’s success lies in its innovative approach to model training and architecture design. The company developed its models using a massive dataset of 2 trillion tokens, with a remarkable 87% consisting of source code and only 13% natural language content. This composition represents a significant departure from traditional language models, which typically emphasize human language over programming languages. DeepSeek’s engineering team implemented several cutting-edge techniques to maximize efficiency. The company employs mixture of experts (MoE) architecture, where different subsets of model parameters activate for different inputs, significantly improving computational efficiency and task specialization. Additionally, the implementation of multi-head latent attention (MLA) enhances the model’s ability to process context and dependencies across extended passages of text and code. Modification of model parameters and architecture, such as adjusting attention mechanisms and other configurations, has contributed to notable performance improvements. Perhaps most remarkably, DeepSeek achieved these results while operating under strict US chip export controls. The company was forced to use lower-cost, export-eligible AI chips rather than cutting-edge NVIDIA hardware, compelling the development of specialized training methods that maximize efficiency per GPU. Achieving optimal model output required correct parameter settings, ensuring the model performed accurately and efficiently. This constraint ultimately became an advantage, driving innovations that reduced training costs to approximately $6 million for their V3 model—a fraction of OpenAI’s estimated $100+ million expenditure for GPT-4. The instruction tuning process for DeepSeek models focuses heavily on code generation and reasoning tasks. The training data includes extensive instruction data specifically designed to enhance the model’s ability to understand and generate code across multiple programming languages. DeepSeek’s advanced code write capabilities enable the model to automatically generate high-quality code from user prompts, leveraging large-scale training on code datasets and sophisticated language modeling techniques. This specialized approach has resulted in pre trained models that excel at complex programming tasks while maintaining strong general conversational abilities. All model weights are published under the MIT license, supporting unrestricted research use and furthering the open-weight model philosophy. However, there are important distinctions in commercial terms and usage contexts that users should verify before proceeding with commercial deployments. Training and Data: The Foundation of DeepSeek’s Intelligence DeepSeek’s remarkable code intelligence is rooted in a meticulously curated and expansive training dataset. The company’s code language models, including DeepSeek Coder, are trained from scratch on a dataset that is 87% code and 13% natural language, with content in both English and Chinese. This unique data composition ensures that the models are deeply attuned to the nuances of programming languages while retaining the ability to process and generate natural language for documentation and comments. To achieve state-of-the-art performance, DeepSeek sources its training data from various coding related benchmarks, such as HumanEval Python and HumanEval Multilingual. This approach allows the models to learn from real-world coding challenges and diverse programming scenarios, enhancing their ability to generate accurate and contextually relevant code. The pre-training phase leverages a project-level code corpus, enabling the models to understand and complete code at the scale of entire software projects—a critical capability for modern development workflows. Instruction tuning is a key part of DeepSeek’s training process. By incorporating 2 billion tokens of instruction data, the models are fine-tuned to follow complex prompts and deliver precise, high-quality code outputs. The use of a large window size—up to 16,000 tokens—during pre-training allows DeepSeek Coder to capture long-range dependencies within codebases, making it especially effective for project level code completion and understanding intricate code structures. This rigorous training methodology, combined with advanced language models and instruction tuning, positions DeepSeek’s models at the forefront of code generation and AI-driven software development.
